Circular Fabric Development: Giordano's Support for School Garment Upcycling and Fabric Recycling in China

Shaping Tomorrow's Textile Circularity

As a successful global retailer and popular clothing brand in Asia, Giordano is committed to being involved with the future of fashion and local student programs.  We are delighted Giordano joined our New Focus team at Primary School No. 2 in Foshan, China in an on-going school uniform circular up cycling sustainability project.  Here, we had the pleasure of introducing students to the textile recycling process and encouraging them to participate in fabric circularity by donating old/worn uniforms.  A huge thanks to Giordano for contributing new shirts to students and school staff.

Giordano's Support for School Garment Upcycling

Giordano is the first retail clothing brand in China to help support a school uniform recycling program.  As retailers look towards the future of fashion with a desire to build circular programs, the young population is also looking for solutions to the material waste crisis at hand.

Partnership with Schools

New Focus Textiles has launched three school uniform recycling programs for “post-consumer garment take-back” with educational programs in Guangdong, China.  We believe our uniform recycling and garment upcycling initiative will have a positive impact on the environment, future supply chain improvement, and student growth mindset in China.  Moreover, we believe young people and retailers must build a relationship of make and take-back in order to improve our environment.  Importantly, involved students focus on sustainable knowledge education and contribution.  Ultimately, garment recycling programs are important to building a more sustainable future.

Impact on Community

Within the school upcycling model, recycled fabric is manufactured to produce new uniforms and garments for members of the Foshan community.

Unquestionably, we believe younger generations learn and grow through achievement and involvement.  Not only do student programs empower young sustainability action, but also their contribution has been a important in creating an upcycling example.  Join us as we continue to explore the closed-loop journey in post-consumer garments and recycled cotton textile and garment production.

Supply chain tracking is essential for long-term sustainable progress and benchmarking.  With QR codes, we monitor the quantity, wastage, lead times, and other information of the garments.  Firstly, students donate used uniform shirts for garment and fiber recycling.  We sort the uniforms, trim the garments, and clean the fabric.  Next, a mechanical recycling and physical disintegration process breaks down the fabric into small fibers.   Lastly, virgin cotton and the recycled fibers blend together in an advanced spinning process in up to fine 40/1 yarn size for apparel fabric manufacturing.

Promoting Circular Fabric Development

Apart from this post, our website shares more insight about our circular operations and recycled cotton savings.  Above all, it is our duty to manufacture as sustainably as possible and share our research with the textile community.  Please, join us as we continue to explore the journey towards a circular economy in post-consumer garments and fashion recycling.  We look forward to expanding this program and building more circular systems into retail garment and fabric production, hospitality linens, and textiles for uniform-rich businesses and schools.
